“I just want to thank you for your time and understanding.”

A few weeks ago a mother called The Family Place fearful that her 5 year old had been sexually abused.  He had been exhibiting some inappropriate behavior at preschool. A telephone conversation with the Child Advocacy Coordinator provided information on normal sexual development and signs to look for sexual abuse.  This mother told us, “I was sick for days, but after talking to you, my entire being calmed down.  I just want to thank you for your time and understanding.”

Everyday The Family Place receives calls from parents experiencing a crisis.   The challenges vary as widely as the individuals who call us. We help all parents: the mother who calls unsure if co-sleeping with her newborn is a good idea; the father who can’t pay for child care and fears the loss of his job; the frustrated parent who doesn’t understand why a two year old keeps yelling  “No”; the single parent whose children are fighting every day;  the grandparent who thinks a cherished grandchild has been molested. These are all real crises to the people living them in the moment.

Everyday, our staff touches the lives of parents through home and center based services. We take the time to listen to the parent, suggesting concrete action steps and providing education,  resources and information. Not only do we intervene in the moment, we also help the parent or caregiver begin to develop a way to address future concerns and questions.

With our talented, dedicated staff, our strong and active board, and many meaningful community collaborations, The Family Place is building a stronger community, one family at a time.
