Families Learning Together
Families Learning Together -- FLT for short -- is a parenting and life skills program. The goal of FLT is to help young mothers (in their teens and 20s) address barriers to self sufficiency so that they are better able to care for themselves and their children.
Every week from September to June, the young
women in the FLT program participate in educational programs to help
them finish high school, earn a GED, or attend college or other
training programs. They attend weekly parenting, life skills and
wellness classes. Worksites in childcare, jewelry, kitchen, or
computers help them develop and enhance job readiness skills. They
have access to counseling, crisis support, and case management
services.
Most of the young women in FLT live in poverty. Many of them come
from backgrounds in which they have experienced physical or sexual
abuse, neglect, domestic violence, or parental substance use. All of
them are working to create better futures for themselves and their
children.
